Do I need a boating license to rent a boat?

To rent a boat through Boatopia or any rental business, you and any additional driver must carry proof of competency while on board. Proof of competency includes a Pleasure Craft Operator’s Card or a completed Boat Rental Safety Checklist.

Boatopia HIGHLY recommends that all drivers of the boat obtain a Pleasure Craft Operator’s card prior to the rental period, although it is not mandatory.

Per Transport Canada, you or any additional boat drivers may complete a Rental Boat Safety Checklist signed by yourself and the rental agency which counts as proof of competency for the time period of the rental.

Your dealer will provide you with the training to complete these checklists. This may be in the form of a quick one on one course or a video safety briefing you can watch on Boatopia.

Note that dealerships may not allow rentals with a Boat Renal Safety Checklist only and may require the renter to have a Pleasure Craft Operator’s Card in order to complete the rental. Please refer to the dealership’s policies prior to completing your booking.

You can see if a dealership requires a PCOC by checking the listing and seeing if the Boat License section is set to Required or Optional.

If you are interested in getting a Pleasure craft operators card, here are a few links to accredited course providers, some have even provided discounts on the course to our amazing Boatopia Renters!
